Robert Solomon from NFPA will give a presentation on safeguarding buildings during construction.

2017 has been remarkable thus far with regard to the number and severity of large, impactful fires involving residential construction and occupancies. Numerous construction site fires throughout the US including one in Maryland have resulted in an estimated direct property loss of $400M-well beyond the annual average of all construction fires. Wood frame construction has been at the center of this debate.

So what is behind these events that has caused 2017 to be so unusual?  A review of these fires, coupled with a look at what the related code provisions are (and are not) that got us to this point will be discussed. Where the potential gaps lie in the regulatory process, who is or should be filling those gaps and most importantly, what is being done right now to improve upon the culture of building construction site safety that should be present, but is missing will also be covered.

This presentation will involve an interactive portion where attendees will be logging into an online learning platform at  You can test your knowledge individually or as a team.  The platform works equally well with smart phones, tablets or even laptops and is extremely easy to use.
